Adopt an Open-plan Design for Your Interiors

Updated: Feb 17, 2022

The best way to make your home appear more spacious is by adopting an Open-Plan design.

But what is an Open-Plan design?

Spaces which freely flow into one another without any barriers like walls or doors. This type of Fluid planning brings along transparency in spaces & creates an element of interest. Lets not forget how this can transform small apartments into larger looking homes.

Furthermore, it adds to the overall grandeur – this is achieved by scaling up your furniture pieces which in turn adds more elegance to your aesthetics. Once the spaces open up, the decor can easily receive any bold look in terms of dark veneer, colour etc.

Transition to various rooms can be beautifully created by selecting different materials and textures which defines individual spaces.

Let’s now discuss the advantages of this design plan –

  1. Open plan design plays a vital role on human minds too. Compact spaces tend to confine one’s thinking whereas openness brings in a sense of expansion in our minds. After all what we see, is how we feel and thus perceive.

  2. Improved traffic flow – Due to less or no internal barriers, moving around the apartment or office space becomes smooth.

  3. Increased natural light & ventilation- As the partitions and walls are knocked off, spaces are enhanced with natural light from windows around. It allows for cross ventilation too thus making the apartment more beautiful.

  4. Better interaction/communication- This is so crucial given one does not have to worry about dropping their task in order to convey important messages or in many cases creates company while still doing your household chores. Open floor plan allows individual activities to co-exist with family time. One can continue to carry out their task yet communicate with each other.

  5. Open concept homes create interconnected spaces without barrier, this helps people move swiftly from one room to another without loosing sight of the previous space. This is so essential for parents to keep an eye on their infants/kids. This connection creates a feeling and bond so strong with each other.

However there are some disadvantages too hence it’s essential to recognise which spaces can be combined for a smooth functional home.

  1. Cooling certain spaces can become less effective.

  2. Sound and smell freely travel through the house

  3. Spaces require to be constantly kept clean and organised.

  4. Details are magnified.

Spaces like living, dining & kitchen can combine up into large spaces while entertaining guests. Bedrooms can be isolated with doors to maintain privacy.

But the Question does arise how to keep cooking smell from travelling into the rest of the house? Well for this -Provide translucent glass partitions with sliding doors to segregate kitchen space from the living and dining area. This even increases efficiency in air-conditions functioning.
